How much to tip hairdresser… that’s the question I’m asked on a daily basis.

Coco Creative Wellness is a Cincinnati-based hair salon that offers a wide variety of services to clients in the metro area. Its team of professionals undergoes regular training to keep up to date with the latest procedures in the industry. Salon owners Coleen Herman, Kenji Cumming, and Lisa Herman specialize in different types of services. Coleen specializes in haircuts, hair color, and bridal hair and makeup services, while Kenji focuses on men's hair services.

It makes for the perfect pick-me-up in between salon appointments, too. If you're switching up your shade for the first time, Redway suggests speaking to a professional colorist first. "While it’s not necessary to tip more as a regular customer, tips help promote a mutually beneficial ongoing relationship between clients and barbers."

Most owners agree that while they don't expect tips, they always appreciate them. "If the salon owner is cutting or coloring your hair, it is customary to tip them 15 to 20%, just as you would any other stylist—they are still providing a service even if they own the business," Abramite notes. "It is unnecessary to additionally tip the salon owner if another stylist in the salon serviced you." For instance, if you're running late to your appointment, Abramite says that tipping more is a nice gesture. "If you are late, the stylist has to work quicker while keeping the quality of the service at the same level, which is challenging in a time crunch," she says. Salon owners often hold the title of master stylists, and though they might have a slightly elevated price point, it’s generally not drastically different from that of their employees.

Miller says that while any dollar amount is good, you can even go upwards to $5 to $10 if you can afford to. He would also ask how your salon handles gratuity, as some places might pool their tips. "At Spoke & Weal, our master stylists pool a percentage of tips for the support team — as we do not want a shampoo to be incentivized by a guest tip opportunity," he says. "That doesn’t prevent guests from tipping our support individually if they prefer. We just also want to make things easy and fluid for all so the support has a dedicated pool distributed based on the percentage of hours worked." Just as you would tip your stylist who cuts and styles your hair, Miller says a 20 percent tip is the standard here, too, and many hairdressers may expect this. There is a lot to consider when you do tip, though, and if 20 percent doesn't feel right to you, you can try figuring out what is appropriate in different ways that feel right.

Whether you should be tipping the person shampooing your hair, Trans responds, "Absolutely. My assistants work very hard to keep my day running smoothly and help the client have a satisfactory experience at the salon." When it comes to tipping, "the standard practice among satisfied clients tends to be 20%" according to Tran and Stenson. Abrio adds, "Tips are a funny thing. I personally always tip according to my experience. I hate the percentage rule. It’s a good guideline, but a tip is a gift, and it’s such a personal situation." Many salons don’t allow tipping with credit or debit cards since it's harder to divvy. “When I was at my old salon where this was the policy, I often had days where I wouldn’t get tips at all because the clients would forget and not have cash or checks on them,” says Phommavong.

"And obviously, everyone's hair is different; everyone's braid is going to look different; everyone's bun is going to look different — you're just going to play with the placement." She uses a rattail comb to move each strand of hair where she wants it, then uses the same products and brush to pull those pieces of hair back into the ponytail using additional ties.
